Freelance Neuroscience Editor/Writer



The Society for Neuroscience, a scientific non-profit organization representing over 36,000 members, seeks a full-time freelance contract Editor/Writer to write and coordinate approximately five pages of editorial feature content per weekly issue of The Journal of Neuroscience (approximately 300 editorial pages per year). Content development will require close collaboration with Editor-in-Chief located in Boston. The Editor/Writer also will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to identify topics for invited reviews.



The Editor/Writer will be responsible for writing the “This Week in The Journal” page under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief, which highlights one article from each of the Journal’s four scientific sections in every issue (Cellular Molecular; Development/Plasticity/Repair; Behavioral Systems/Cognition; and Neurobiology of Disease).



In consultation with the Editor-in-Chief, the Editor/Writer will work with outside authors to develop short articles that are closely linked to current research. Several features of this type are currently included in the Journal: “Toolboxes” (reviews of new methods and techniques), “Journal Clubs” (reviews by postdocs or students of recently published articles), and “Commentaries” on topics relevant to neuroscientists. Content may be written by the Editor/Writer, or solicited from guest authors.





SCOPE OF WORK includes the following. Other tasks may be assigned as required.



• Generate an annual publishing plan for review by Editor-in-Chief, Senior Director, and Journal Editorial Manager, that will ensure a steady flow of feature content resulting in approximately 5 pages per issue;

• Write and coordinate one-page “This Week in The Journal” features under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief

• Solicit contributions from junior scientists for “Journal Club”-style reviews of significant articles published in the Journal;

• Solicit contributions from key scientists for Commentaries that expand the scientific and educational mission of the Journal;

• Invite leading researchers to develop Mini-Reviews on topics approved by the Editor-in-Chief;

• Edit manuscripts from invited authors for review and approval by Editor-in-Chief;

• Coordinate manuscript processing, peer review administration and production schedule for features articles with Editorial Manager and other Journal staff;

• Provide weekly reports on the status of Feature articles in the pipeline to Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Manager;

• Adhere to production schedule by providing materials to the printer on time;

• Proofread all feature pages after printer has composed them but prior to going to press;

• Perform other duties as assigned.





Requirements:

Ph.D. in neuroscience (preferred) or equivalent scientific training/expertise and superior communication skills, with at least 5 years exp in science writing/editing. Boston-area location preferred; occasional travel to DC central office and Society annual meetings. Must have familiarity with Macintosh computers. Must be proficient in Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office. Must be web savvy and familiar with using databases.
